Lunar Eclipse in Virgo
What Is Power?
This lunar eclipse finishes the eclipse cycle began two weeks ago, but what it portends is just beginning to find expression in each of us and in the world. Since this eclipse cycle included the monumental conjunction of Saturn and Neptune at zero degrees of Aries, the beginning of the zodiac and of all things, in a pattern not repeated for the last 6000 years, its epic proportions will take years, perhaps lifetimes for us to realize.
Meanwhile, blithely going forward, this Lunar Eclipse is conjoined with the South Node in Virgo, representing a shadowy expression of our past, our former selves. It’s asking us to not only look at, but carefully scrutinize the facts, the details of what is going on around us, both personally as well as globally. Virgo also rules our health, how we approach it, how we care for ourselves, and in the global picture, how we care for others around us, and the Earth.
This Full, red “Blood Moon” in the sky is the perfect symbolic reflection of what runs under the surface of our consciousness. Every sign in the zodiac has a light side and a dark face. At a lunar eclipse, we are faced with the shadow of the Sun covering the face of the Moon, the darker side of our subconscious. The shadow of Virgo, is a kind of critical nature that is devoid of feeling, and a righteousness about one’s beliefs, which can even border on heartlessness.
Since Virgo is an earth sign, it deals with our relationship to feeling safe in the world. Living in a time of increasing fear for the security of our social fabric, with hooligans running the show, with the balance of power overwhelmingly in the hands of the rich and powerful, we want to ask, what is true power? Is it the power to kill, to destroy whomever or whatever at will? Is it about who has the most money, the biggest bombs? If the ability to create fear is the currency we use to evaluate what’s powerful, then we are operating at a very low, base level of consciousness. The deadly scourge of Greed runs rampant now upon our planet, skewing our values, and eroding our sense of security.
Opposite the Virgo Moon at this juncture are five planetary bodies in Pisces. Mars has moved into Pisces the day before this eclipse, just in time, as if it was needed to help contribute to the forces of sensitivity and compassion at this important end of a cycle, one that influences us for the next six months.
Most significantly, the asteroid Athena is exactly conjoined the Sun at this eclipse. Pallas Athena was the warrior goddess, sprung out of the head of Zeus, and an invincible force in battle. She is the power of the Feminine and channels her brilliant mind as a symbol of the growth of creative intelligence, from the instinctive level of warrior, to being able to perceive a higher consciousness through awareness of larger patterns[1]. In the sign of Pisces, the symbol here is one of using the warrior consciousness through the eyes of the archetypal Feminine, in ways that embrace the collective, to be able to see beyond separations and polarities, and honor the process we are in of creating a global compassionate awareness of our integral diversity.
The North Node (our collective destiny) is joined with Mercury and Venus in Pisces, and also from the later degrees of Pisces to the first degrees of Aries, this eclipse again includes the epic Saturn/Neptune conjunction. A powerful confluence of energies! We are collectively staring at the blood on our hands. As we regard this lunar eclipse, each of us faces the challenge of creating a spiritual life out of the ruins of patriarchal, colonial civilization. The shadowy Virgo Moon at the South Node gives us pause to reflect upon the evidence of our collective corruption, the Epstein Files for example, that point to the moral rot at the core of the billionaire business model that has eaten away the enormous resources of this Earth, leaving us all impoverished. Even more, what’s been eaten away are whatever moral standards we used to have, leaving the principles and philosophy of social democracy in shambles.
Chiron, the wounded healer, and Eris, the mischievous goddess of discord, are conjoined with the largest of asteroids, Ceres at present. Ceres, now classified as a dwarf planet, is a former water world now composed of 90% ice. Mythologically she is the Great Mother goddess who brings food and nourishment to the people and life forms of the Earth. Hanging out now with Chiron and Eris, this cabal of spirits asks us to witness the reflection of the ongoing destruction of the delicate balance of our world’s ecology, its ability to sustain not only human lives, but all life forms as we know them. Can we be instructed by the wounding (Chiron) that has been done, to look upon our mischief and disrespect (Eris) with humility and a renewed reverence for the Feminine?
We’re going to need the symbology of all those planets in Pisces to do the healing we need! Mars at zero degrees is just beginning to learn how to be a compassionate warrior; we need the influence of Mercury in Pisces to scrutinize our beliefs that either threaten or confirm this New Vision of a world of peace; of Venus exalted in Pisces to show us that Love is the force of healing; and the epic Neptune and Saturn in newborn Aries to remind us that the era of greed and avarice has already passed, and it is up to us to disassemble the old order and create a new one. A tall order, but one that when so many of us are all onboard, truly miracles can happen.
Jupiter in its exaltation in Cancer forms a harmonious trine (120˚ angle) to the Pisces planets and sextiles (makes a supportive angle of 60˚) to the Moon in this chart. Jupiter is the planet of Vision, specifically ruling spirituality, and in Cancer it emphasizes the deeper reality that reminds us, we are all siblings to each other, no matter our color, race, or beliefs. Loving compassion is the glue that holds societies together, at whatever conscious or unconscious level. Jupiter shows us the horizon line, the North Star of where we are headed. Jupiter will go direct just a week later, bringing activation of its powers into the outer world.Let the strong light of this bright planet shining overhead in the night sky be the guide for what is essential, for us to move forward through these challenging times.
